Center for Human Genetics

The Centre For Human Genetics is engaged in advanced research, teaching and training in areas which lie at the interface of modern genetics and medicine. Besides research and teaching, the Centre provides comprehensive clinical services, including genetic counselling for a range of genetic disorders and inborn errors of metabolism. The Centre has been conducting intensive short-term courses and training programmes in human disease genetics and molecular cytogenetics which have routinely attracted young scientists and clinicians from across the country. With support from the Government of Karnataka, the Centre provides diagnostic and genetic counselling services free of cost to BPL families.

The Centre offers a post-doctoral Fellowship programme in Paediatric Genetics in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health and the degree awarded by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore. It conducts a two-year Master's degree programme in Human Disease Genetics under the aegis of Mysore University. This interdisciplinary programme at the interface of modern biology and medicine covers fundamental cell and molecular biology, population biology, statistics, human genetics, genomics, clinical genetics and genetic counselling. The curriculum consists of lectures, laboratory work, seminars and discussions and includes a strong component of research, case studies and activity-based learning. The programme can be viewed as a first step towards a professional career in human genetics, disease diagnostics and allied bio-medical fields or towards advanced studies leading to a Ph.D. or MD degree. The first batch of students enrolled in August 2015.
