European Association for the Study of Diabetes

On 21 April 1965, the first General Assembly of the EASD was held with Dr. A.E. Renold and 220 participants in Montecatini, Italy. Dr. Hoet presided as Chairman of the Steering Committee, the decision to form the Association having been taken in Italy of the preceeding year at the IDF Congress in Toronto. The first Annual Meeting took place at the same time with papers in French, German and English - it was not until 1970-1971 that English was adopted as the single language.

The European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD) was created by EASD to provide funding in all areas of diabetes research across the entire European Region. The aims of EFSD are to encourage and support groundbreaking diabetes research and to promote the next generation of leading diabetes researchers.
