He earned his BA degree in Economics from Harvard in 1981 and has more than 30 years of business and entrepreneurial experience including founder or executive positions at a variety of Silicon Valley startups. Several of his companies were taken public and/or sold to public companies, including one in the medical-technology arena that was sold to Varian, the leading maker of linear accelerators used in cancer therapy. Following his startup experience, he retired to become an Angel Investor in real estate and high tech. He came out of retirement to found and fund AGT after meeting Roscoe Brady at NIH

Dr. Hendren co-chairs the National Cancer Informatics Program’s Nanotechnology Working Group, as well as the US-EU Nanomaterial Environment, Health and Safety Community of Research on Risk Assessment. She also founded and chairs the Intereach (Interdisciplinary Integration Research Careers Hub) community of practice. Her research focuses on human and data aspects of methods for synthesizing knowledge across boundaries, particularly in complex and emerging fields with pervasive uncertainty.

Dr. Thomas Webster

Thomas J. Webster’s (H index: 81, Google Scholar) degrees are in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh (B.S., 1995) and in biomedical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (M.S., 1997; Ph.D., 2000). Prof. Webster is the current director of the Nanomedicine Laboratories (currently at 23 members) and has completed extensive studies on the use of nanophase materials in medicine. He pioneered the use of nanomaterials to increase tissue growth, inhibit infection, and decrease inflammation. He was appointed Department Chair of Chemical Engineering at Northeastern University in 2012 in which the Department recently broke the record for the fastest increase in ranking over a five-year period from the U.S. News and World Report. In his 17 years in academics, Prof. Webster has graduated/supervised over 149 visiting faculty, clinical fellows, post-doctoral students, and thesis completing B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. students. To date, his lab group has generated over 13 textbooks, 68 book chapters, 376 invited presentations, at least 503 peer-reviewed literature articles and/or conference proceedings, at least 767 conference presentations, and 42 provisional or full patents. His research has led to the formation of 12 companies with 4 FDA approved nanomedicine products. He is the founding editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Nanomedicine (the first open-access, international journal in nanomedicine which has a 5-year impact factor of 5.03). Prof. Webster currently directs or co-directs several centers in the area of biomaterials: The Center for Natural and Tropical Biomaterials (Medellin, Colombia), The Center for Pico and Nanomedicine (Wenzhou China), and The International Materials Research Center (Soochow, China). He was named the Art Zafiropoulo Chair at Northeastern University for his contributions to nanomedicine in 2013. Prof. Webster has received numerous honors including but not limited to: 2012, Fellow, American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE, representing the top 2% of all medical and biological engineers); 2013, Fellow, Biomedical Engineering Society; 2015, Wenzhou 580 Award; 2015, Zheijang 1000 Talent Program; 2016, International Materials Research Chinese Academy of Science Lee-Hsun Lecture Award; 2016, International College of Fellows, Biomaterials Science and Engineering; and 2016, Acta Biomaterialia Silver Award. After two postdocs at Syracuse University and Washington University in St. Louis, he started his Assistant Professorship st the University of Southern California in 2002 and then moved to Stanford in 2004. He moved to NIH in 2009 and became a Senior Investigator and Chief of the Laboratory of Molecular Imaging and Nanomedicine (LOMIN) at the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), NIH. His current research interests include development of molecular imaging toolbox for better understanding of biology, early diagnosis of disease, monitoring therapy response, and guiding drug discovery/development. His lab puts special emphasis on high-sensitivity nanosensors for biomarker detection and theranostic nanomedicine for imaging, gene and drug delivery, and monitoring of treatment. Dr. Chen has published over 600 peer-reviewed papers (H-index >110) and numerous books and book chapters. He is the founding editor of journal “Theranostics” (2016 IF = 8.766). He was elected as AIMBE Fellow (2017), received ACS Bioconjugate Chemistry Lecturer Award (2016), NIH Director’s Award (2014), NIBIB Mentor Award (2012) and 1000 talent plan B (2010). Dr. Hossein A. Ghanbari, CEO, President & Chief Scientific Officer, Panacea Pharmaceuticals Inc. Hossein A. Ghanbariis a co-founder of Panacea Pharmaceuticals and now serves as its CEO, President, Chief Scientific Officer, and Chairman of the Board. The Company has three drug candidates for cancer (immunotherapy), one of which is currently in Phase 1 clinical trials, and another candidate for treating neural damage (treatment of chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment). Panacea has developed diagnostic tests for prostate cancer (PC Detect®), breast cancer (BC DetectSM), lung cancer (LC Detect®), and colorectal cancer (CC DetectSM). LC Detect was selected as one of 2007’s Top 10 Medical Breakthroughs by Timemagazine. Panacea also has a late-stage pre-clinical cancer imaging program to complete its integrated cancer management approach. Dr. Ghanbari began his career in the pharmaceutical industry at Abbott Laboratories in Chicago, Ill., where he developed several pharmaceuticals and the first ever commercialized diagnostic test for Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). He was part of the New Drug Application (NDA) team for Leupron, the very successful prostate cancer drug, as well as for Survanta, the current drug of choice for preventing and treating respiratory distress syndrome in premature infants. He directed the Analytical sections of the Investigational New Drug (IND) application for an antibody-based antiviral drug, and was a member of Abbott’s Technical Advisory Board. Dr. Ghanbari was inducted into the prestigious honorary organization, the Volwiler Society, established by Abbott to recognize the company’s most distinguished and accomplished scientists. After nearly a decade with Abbott, Dr. Ghanbari left to form Molecular Geriatrics Corporation, (a biopharma company focused on developing drugs for neurodegenerative diseases) and served as its Senior Vice-President for R&D. Subsequently, Dr. Ghanbari was instrumental in establishing Nymox Pharmaceutical Corporation (NASDAQ: NYMX), and served as Senior Vice-President for R&D and Strategic Planning as well as a Director on its board. While with Nymox, he developed the first commercially available cerebral spinal fluid- and urine-based diagnostics tests for Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), and identified opportunities for complementary technologies that Nymox in-licensed, which together established the company’s international presence as a leader in AD diagnostics and therapeutics. Prior to entering private industry, Dr. Ghanbari held professorships at Pennsylvania State University, University of Florida, and Arya-Mehr University of Technology (now Sharif University). He was also on the academic staff of The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences as an Adjunct Professor. He currently serves as a Board member of the Gastric Cancer Foundation. Dr. Ghanbari received his bachelor of sciences degree, with distinction, from the American University in Beirut, and his master’s and doctorate degrees in Biochemistry from Pennsylvania State University. He has authored over 70 peer reviewed publications, and is an inventor on nearly 100 patents and patent applications worldwide.
