Institute of the Innocents

The Istituto degli Innocenti in Florence is one of the oldest Italian institutions dedicated to the protection of children.
From February 5, 1445 , the day on which the little Agata Smeralda , abandoned here, was received , the Institute operates continuously in favor of children, mothers and families.

After having been occupied for centuries by abandoned children, today the Istituto degli Innocenti is a Public Service Company (ASP) pursuant to art. 32 of the regional law of 3 August 2004 n. 43 and is governed by a Statute whose latest version was approved with DPG Toscana n.152 of October 18, 2016.

The Institute promotes the active rights of children and adolescents as set out in the Convention on the Rights of the Child , adopted in New York on 20 November 1989 and rendered enforceable in Italy by Law May 27, 1991, n. 176. Collaborates with UNICEF- Innocenti Research Center, which is based in the Institute as required by the Agreement between the Government of the Italian Republic and the United Nations Children's Fund signed in New York on September 23, 1986.
