Palazzo Re Enzo

In 1200 the City of Bologna expropriated numerous buildings to create today's Piazza Maggiore and built the first complex of buildings used specifically to perform public functions: the Palazzo del Podestà, by King Enzo and the Capitano del Popolo.

Palazzo Re Enzo, called 'Palazzo Nuovo' to distinguish it from the Palazzo del Podestà, was built between 1244 and 1246 (at the same time as the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo) as an extension of the municipal buildings.

Just three years later it becomes the 'residence' of the King prisoner of the Battle of Fossalta, to whom the Palace owes its name: King Enzo of Sardinia, son of Frederick II, who spends the next twenty-three years, until his death (1272 ). In the popular literature many legends flourished around his figure.
