Societe des Gens de Lettres de France

This exceptional eighteenth-century private mansion, originally built on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées, is located in the countryside. The hotel is initially a "madness", sheltering - according to tradition - the clandestine loves of the Count of Artois, brother of Louis XVI.
After having known several owners, it is bought in 1926 by Théophile Bader, president of Galeries Lafayette, and André Lévy, real estate investor, for its privileged location.

The hotel, listed as a historical monument, can not be converted into a commercial building. On intervention of Edouard Herriot, Minister of National Education and writer, it is given to the State with mission to house the Society of People of Letters. Its movement, stone by stone, rue du Faubourg Saint-Jacques is one of the major projects of the interwar period.

The SGDL settles there in 1929. On this occasion, the hotel is endowed with precious "Art Deco" furniture made by the Galeries Lafayette master, under the direction of Maurice Dufrène.
